Hiragana and Kanji are used for native Japanese words, Katakana is generally used for foreign words. The memorization is the hardest part! I just got Rosetta Stone as a gift so I'm using that too. They do mix them together and all of the sounds (so far, I'm only halfway through the first quarter) are the same - you just use them for different things. :) Let me know if you continue! Erika,

It does sound like a happy language. I tried to learn a little on my own last year with some audio tapes from the library. That was easy enough but then I looked into how to learn to read Japanese.
